Science Department Meeting
Friday, December 6, 2013 (7:15 – 8:00am)
H103 – BioHazard Meeting Room

Intro: recap on observations - how wonderful they were turning in observation reports to Rick
Observations: Active in nature, and collaborative - working together. Students don't really know how good they have it here. Collectively to work on - offering a reflection at the end of the period, get them for 3 minutes back in lecture or back in lab, what did you learn today. What were the end goals and content objectives you should have reached by this time. Help them as they move on. Constant guided questioning, guiding them in the right direction. Workshop on how to guide students, the right type of questioning to get them where they need to go.
  1. Looking Ahead – Important Dates to Note
    1. Today – Happy Birthday Gina!
    2. Tomorrow – Happy Birthday Craig!
    3. Thursday-Saturday, Dec 12-14 – NSTA Denver
    4. Sunday, Dec 15 – Open House
    5. Tuesday, Dec 17 – Senior Science Final (10:15) / 90-minute periods - Final version up in faculty room. Conflict seniors see Rosie, laboratory component - if a student is in both, need to determine conflicts
    6. Friday, Dec 20 – Faculty Christmas Party / Start of Christmas Vacation - Christmas party with child care

    8. Saturday, Jan 4 – Happy Birthday Eddie (& Owen Gorr)!

  1. 7th Period Update
    1. “No Go” for Next Year - will be the following year
    2. New Theology Curriculum will Start for Freshmen Next Year (14-15) - will be phasing that in for next year
    3. No Mandated Physics-9 or Human Geo (14-15) - not mandated until the 7th period schedule is in place

  1. AP Physics I
    1. College Board has divided AP Physics B into: Splitting it into two different courses
i. Physics 1 – Newtonian mech, work, energy, power, waves, sound, circuits
LHS decided to phase in Physics I next year 14-15, in a year or two see how the class goes with 7th period schedule and possibly offer physics 2 later.
ii. Physics 2 – fluid mech, thermodynamics, e & m, optics, atomic & nuclear
  1. Loyola will replace AP Phy B with AP Physics 1 in 2014-15 - same course as AP Phy B. Freshman physics a lot of the material is repeated in AP Physics I
  2. Loyola will not offer AP Physics 2 in 2014-15
  3. SDMs should heavily promote AP Physics 1 to all Juniors - How to determine how students get funneled. If have taken calculus or are currently taking - can take Physics C and Physics I. If student A is taking calc his senior year he can apply to both and choose. Physics C is priority 1 and B priority 2 or 3 . If not taking Calculus only option is physics 1. Math and science recommendations. Physics 2 is a follow on to physics 1, cannot be taken concurrently. AP Physics 1 - first physics course, some schools are offering them concurrently. But not offering physics 2 as a first year physics course. Only offer Physics 1 for the first year. Physics B is replaced with Physics 1. Freshman would not be able to take this course. Must have completed geometry or be in Algebra II concurrently.
Promote to juniors as a very doable AP course, familiar with a lot of the concepts. Freshman physics is not a prerequisite to take AP Physics I. Junior teachers, let students know that this is a doable AP class. A junior could technically take AP physics I - but dives into the core, and would not be in a life science. AP Physics I probably a senior only course.
i. ≈ 80% is material covered in Physics-9
ii. hope to open 2 sections (enough qualified students?)

  1. Sub-Department Budgets
  2. Budget form - deadline Dec 13 - pretty quick turn around. Robb passed out what was submitted last year and modify as necessary. Physics budget, budget for setting up a new physics classroom. Plan on it now as well as physics 1 expenses. Put in the budget now for next year.
    1. Same Routine as Last Year
    2. Due December 13 (“Hard” Deadline from Andrey) – Submit to Andrey by 12/13/13
    3. Frank wants us to Outfit another Physics Classroom (Mike - Budget for it)
    4. Physics I Expenses? (Mike – Budget for it)
    5. Sparkview 2 Rollout? (Price Estimate?) - GLX's are on the way out. Sparkview 2 roll out. neat devices PASCO - sparklinks are currently being used. Sparklink touch screens are slow, designed for middle school. Sparklink USB - take the laptops - all the software is on the computer. Spark links, all the software is on the computer. $119 - sparklinks. $350 - sparkviews (touch screen). Can load up labs, but meant for middle school so processor is slow. Data studio and probware is still in, just replacing the GLX with sparklinks. Capstone is the new Data studio, however it is really complicated. Data studio is still around but will not be updated, but will be supported. Both data studio and capstone will be put on the student laptops. Roll out plan - start with freshman physics spark links for physics dept. Chemistry and bio use GLX and data studio - next year's freshman will be moving through with new technology. For next year sparklinks for the freshman class. Three more sets needed. Donate our old technology to another school - go higher with this to Greg to take our old stuff to another school.

  1. NSTA / CSTA Long Beach; December 4 – 16, 2014
    1. http://www.nsta.org/conferences/sessions.aspx
    2. Submit Proposals Online – Deadline is January 15, 2014 - deadline is Jan 15 - proposal process is online. Robb will create a screen flow to show how to submit a proposal to submit at NSTA. Challenge us in that way - all should be taking those risks to present. Astronomy and Oceanography would be great stuff for NSTA, not the usual.
    3. Presentation Proposals

  1. Open House
    1. Sunday, December 15, 2013 (Mandatory for all) - 1-4pm open, we need to be here early to set up. Will not be available until Saturday morning. Fr. Greg's 25th anniversary mass on Friday with reception afterwards. Open house cannot be set up until after. Realistically will be available Saturday morning. But Sunday morning would be the best time. Huge deal at LHS, memorable experience for students. Xavier is a display take about courses and curriculum. Presentations in Paul and Craig's rooms. For first year teachers, watch a presentation. Big attraction and that all the 8th graders talk about is the exploratorium, demonstrations and activities. Fawzia and Andrew get it set up and all of us need to help out. Any labs that are safe and hands on put out. Kids spend 1-1.5 hours there. Robotics team will be in Malloy commons and band in Berendo. More room for labs and demonstrations. Physics, Chem, Bio, Astronomy, Oceanography - set lab up Friday afternoon. Lee is helping out with financial aid. Help out with exploratorium - parents and 7th 8th graders want to talk with students.
    2. Presentations (101 & 104) – Robb, Craig, Mike Lew & Gerry
    3. Xavier – Gary, Paul & Kimberly (Float to Exploratorium – H100)
    4. Exploratorium (H100) – Andrew, Fawzia, Eddie, Mike Laveson, Lee
    5. We need student helpers! (2-4 for Xavier / 6-8 for H100 / 4-6 for H101 & H104) - recruit for exploratorium, Xavier and presentations. Dressed in mass attire. Chris Walter gives LHS ties to borrow for the day. Bring in nice copy of book in BioHaz next week. Pictures of what is going on in class, send to Paul or Gary to come up with slideshow for Xavier.
i. Students helpers should be recruited by the teachers assigned…please work together to ensure we have enough help.
  1. Review Department Tri-Fold
  2. Review Department Presentation
