Laboratory Safety Guru (Brian) – Lesson four

  • Handout, Unit VI-Laboratory Safety Eqpt. and Procedures, Sign in sheet, Van der Graaf safety sheet
  • Electrical Safety- check plugs once a year, there is an inexpensive tester that we can get to test outlets. All outlets in the lab should have GFI's (Ground Fault Interrupt), which cuts current off when there is a short, instead of going to you. We have a green light indicator which if you hit the test button, it turns off.
  • Be aware of where the breakers are in your room.
  • For Van der Graaf users- be aware of when you don't use it...

Junior Registration Survey
  1. What are the students interested in registering for next year?
  2. What should we do about it (if anything)?
  • Junior Survey handout- of those surveyed, overwhelming response, they want to take science in the senior year
  • Three year requirement for science at Loyola, compared to the two required for UC...for Loyola has to be a D course, lab based science. Clarification from Andrey Aristov
  • Almost all of our year long science courses are category D lab based science.
  • Andrey needs to clarify with counseling department.
  • Clarification when we do our info meetings

Restricted Course Information Meetings
  1. Mon – Thur, Feb 27 – March 1
  2. Petition for Reconsideration for a Restricted Course
  • Petition handout Page from Andrey- one page one form, a handier form. Submit to Rob Gorr and the instructors . After submission, if they hear from us, they are in the class, if they don't hear from us, then not in the class.
  • One process for all of the departments.
  • Gorr will give to the instructors for evaluation.

Pre-Registration Meetings with Each Class
    1. Schedule #7
    2. Talking Points
  • Handout- Pre-Registration...
Andrey Handout- Each teacher assigned same room, if there are issues, counselors can take over talking points if need be
  • Talking Points page- 2 minutes only. 3 years of lab based science is mandated...read through the list and see if we can add or subtract talking points.
  • Yearlong science instead of lab based.
  • For freshemen meeting- if you take Physics freshman year, you cannot take Senior Physics, if you are not taking freshman physics, you need to take 3 years of science.
  • Dispel the myth- any freshman CAN take Honors Chem.
  • Sophomores- one application instead of two for efficiency-courtesy of Kwan
  • No sign in in the pre-reg meetings, to avoid confusion on the student end.
  • Need to change AP Physics C requirement- Instead of Honors Pre-Calc, it should be any form of Calculus
  • MAKE points QUICK and SWEET

Science Department Observation Protocol
    1. Examples
    2. Homework
i. Decide what we value
ii. How can these values be assessed by an outsider
iii. Create a simple, succinct observation form

  • Handout- Word clouds, larger words have come up often in the descriptions of values in Loyola Science
  • Homework- read through "Science Grad at Graduation" packet...come up with science department specific formal/informal observation form.
  • How can we make the observation form more objective, instead of "fluff"
  • Goal by the end of March meeting is that we have a template for observation protocols
  • Clarify on whether or not to build it for 55 min. or 5 minute...will clarify with Rick.
